When Your Train of Thought Leaves the Station…

Boston and Maine: The Old Colony Division

My project is to build a railroad set in 1938 New England with the assumption that the Old Colony line, which extended from Newport RI to Boston fell under the control of the B&M.

This allows interchange with NH trains, such as the Comet, and the New York to Boston express passenger trains, while also allowing use of the Yankee Clipper and eventually extending to more northern New England.

The railroad is housed in a 30×14 room with around the wall shelf benchwork and a central peninsula.  There are four major areas to be modeled:

1. A seaport modeled on Newport, RI.

2. An urban interchanged, based on Providence RI.

3. A mill district reminiscent of the Blackstone Valley.

4. A coastal fishing port modeled on Jerusalem/Galilee in Southern Rhode Island

All are rough approximations, although I will be scratchbuilding some of the more prominent buildings and industries that would have existed at the time.

I am going to use farm scenes to help separate areas, as well as my diorama depicting the Elm Lawn Inn, even though it was in New Hampshire.  If I get to expand, it will be removed to the more New Hampshire oriented part of the layout.
