When Your Train of Thought Leaves the Station…

just go with it, and you are all set

Kingston Rhode Island switch tower

One of the items on my “todo” list is the Kingston switch tower.  Unlike the station, which has been rehabbed and has become one of the more busy stations on the Amtrak line, the tower sits off to the side under Route 1, awaiting restoration.

I took these pictures the other day to catalog the building and get a sense of the building itself.  I think scratchbuilding it will not be excessively difficult and present a unique structure.

Love your blog , funny i have been trying to find the location to this switch station in Kingston for awhile would love to photograph the building for my website. Where on route 1? Also there’s a real cool miniature train club in Holliston Ma with what seems like miles of tracks running through the wood. Any train enthusiast should check it out, I know they have a great show once a year. I have some photos on my website. My site is lostinnewenglanddotcom

Kingston is actually on Route 138 in RI between Route 95 and Route 1. I worked there on and off as a tower operator starting in 1975 until the tower finally closed in the late 80s. I was working there in 1976 when the American Freedom Train, a unassisted steam locomotive hauling 26 passenger cars, passed through with hundreds of rail fans watching as it crossed over from Track 1 to Track 2. After I hooped up the train orders giving it the authority to operate against the current of traffic to Wood River Jct., the engineer opened the throttle. The acceleration back to speed was by far, the most impressive thing I have ever witnessed – a combination of the burning bush and the second coming rolled into one.
